Haaaaaaaaay! 8D

I hope everyone had a lovely Christmas! ♥ I totally didn't manage to do a card this year, shame on me. D8 Then again, I lost like 90% of my mailing list anyway, I need to start collecting those again.
I HAD SO MUCH FOOD. I know that's what Christmas is for, but SOOOO MUUUUUCH. Also (on top of everything else) my mom and me baked tons of biscuits and pralines on Boxing Day (like IDIOTS) and now of course we can't even stand to LOOK AT THEM anymore. XDDD Hahaha. Anyone want orange cantuccini, coconut macarons, tarte au chocolat and marzipan-walnut pralines? I CANNOT COMPUTE ANY OF IT. MY SUGAR LIMIT HAS BEEN REACHED FOR THIS YEAR.
...so how were your holidays? XDDD I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S ALMOST 2012, WHERE IS MY 3RD X-FILES MOVIE? /fan-raeg

Anyhoody, HERE'S A WRAP-UP OF WHAT I'VE DONE IN THE PAST FEW WEEKS. It's tediously TL;DR, but I have to offer SOME excuse for my interwebs slackery. XD

WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS WORDS )

And uh, I should really go to bed now. 8D; *has to get up early tomor...today*

PS: I've been ridiculously obsessed (again) with BBC's "Sherlock" series lately. (If you haven't yet, watch it! You can find the relevant links here: http://www.tumblr.com/tagged/sherlock-masterpost )
I think it's because I always get EXTRA obsessive whenever I have to focus on something else that takes up a lot of my nerves (like job hunting or preparation for a big exam), so~ XD ALSO THE NEXT SEASON STARTS ON JANUARY 1ST, SO GET WATCHING. (it's only 3 eps anyway, oh BBC, my creys)

11:32 pm - EUREKA!

I finally got my Master (Magister for you Germans) degree in Media Studies, Media Technology and Law. AND I GOT AN A IN ALL OF MY EXAMS AND MY THESIS. /boasting

I'm really just glad about this because I've done an ultra fuckton of studying in the past few months, especially for my law exam (you know, that subject I studied on a whim and which I don't even want to do professionally... XD;;;)
I don't even know what to do with all that leftover knowledge right now (naturally they only tested me on like 5% of the stuff I had to learn). Anyone wanna hear about the different types of German mortgages? No? Pity. XDD *burns & forgets everything*

(My study load for the final exams! Not included: All the library books (had to return them, lolz) and anything I had to study for tech ๏̯๏)

I'm a bit nostalgic now, I really loved studying. There were some hard times (especially with my tech/math/programming exams, dear lawd), but all in all it was a real fun experience and I wouldn't want to have missed it! ♥
Thank you, university, for teaching me discipline, teamwork, maths, a shitload of facts and also Chinese. :D

So, for a long weekend I will pretend that I haven't got a worry or duty in the world (and shall return to angsting about the job hunt on Tuesday or something XD).
I baked a celebratory tarte au chocolat! NOMNOMNOM~

11:33 pm - CHINA * PART * ONE : SHANGHAI

Roadside Chef Red and Blue Good Morning Shanghai

THE FIRST CHINA POST, IT IS HERE (lol wat)
Look, it only took me a bit over a year and severe prodding by several LJ friends to write this up! Yay! XDD /shot

Our Air China flight from Frankfurt to Shanghai was the epitome of a miserable long-distance flight. (I won't complain too much because we didn't crash, lol). The 'food' was horrid, the leg space miniscule, the entertainment ridiculous and the mismatched cabin pressure made my ankles swell and my unkle's head explode (figuratively >_>). And of course the obligatory projectile vomiting kid in the seat right next to us. But oh well, that bit of torture was well worth it in retrospect.

The high speed train we took from the airport to the inner city was pretty damn impressive. It could reach a maximum speed of 431 kilometres per hour! you could barely even see anything out of the windows because it whizzed past so quickly. It seemed like mostly just industrial outskirts, anyway. XD

Click for more ~riveting~ TL;DR detail plus photos )

Those aren't all photos of course, you can see all of them here. 8D

PS: Guys, can you tell me some awesome LJ layout code websites? I suck at this. XD

Also happy Hannukah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice or just winter in general! Yay! (I'm sure I forgot some options)

I'm sorry that I couldn't write to everyone individually. ._. Special thanks to Andy for the super cute calendar! 8DD

9:02 pm - Fandom Culture, you guys, FANDOM CULTURE!
IT MAKES 11 HAPPY IN HIS PANTS

Be prepared for some TL;DR about my Master thesis. Feel free to skip. XDDD

So, as you might remember from my last entry, I've signed up for my Master thesis (WHICH IS STILL A CONSTANT SOURCE OF STRESS AND ANGSTING LOLZ) and I've decided to write about fandom. It was more of a hunch at first, and I didn't even really think there was literature about it to be honest. 8D; But when I picked my first guidance prof (we get to pick two that will give some practical advice and also review the thesis afterwards) he quickly suggested some books. :0

And woooow. It's interesting! I know I shouldn't be so surprised since well, I chose the subject myself XD (and it's about fandom), but quite frankly I had expected something more... boring and unrelated to my own experiences with fandom culture. I'm a bit traumatized in that regard because the majority of the media theory texts I previously had to read for various university courses were super boring and TL;DR to me. 8D;;;
In the past 2 weeks or so I've started reading texts by Henry Jenkins about fandom culture ("Textual Poachers", "Convergence Culture" and "Fans, Bloggers and Gamers")

Of course it's all written in rather a scientific style (that I will have to adapt for my Master thesis as well), but at the same time it's comprehensible while posing some awesome theories that can be applied to all of fandom culture.
It also contains descriptions of old fandom practises like letterzines, filksongs and editing VHS fandvideos and tons of fandom anecdotes, which I just love reading. 8DD Even about fandoms that I don't really know/care for, like the epic spoiler culture of the Survivor shows in the 2000s (seriously, some of their fans pulled some epic spy shit on there~ like booking out hotels the tv channel wanted to use for casting so they could spy on the contestants being interviewed, hahaha) or fandom outrage about changes in the 80s show "Beauty and the Beast" (WHICH LOOKS HILARIOUS). I'm weird like that. XDDD

I guess I've just never thought that fandom was a LEGITIMATE thing to discuss in an academic setting. >_> Well, if I had thought about it, maybe I would have come to the conclusion that yes; of course it is. Like any major movements~ But when it's just sorta a part of your everyday life, that question doesn't even occur to you. 8D; Or maybe I'm just oblivious like that. It's completely bizarre to read about slash and its societal meaning and relation to gender studies in an academic essay, but pretty fucking awesome at the same time. 8D
Anyhoo, I love this subject. XD
(And if you're interested, I got Henry Jenkin's first book (which he wrote in the beginning of the 90s, it's the one with fandom history stuff and anecdata about older fandoms) as a pdf >u> )

All that fandom talk also made me think about shows that I used to watch as a young teen and then promptly forgot about again (unlike my huge love for The X-Files, obviously). Anyone remember F/X: The Series or the early seasons of Sliders for example? Lolz, I loved that. XDD /nostalgia

Speaking of nostalgia, I went on a little YouTube mp3 thieving trip yesterday (lololol) and here are 2 of my favourites I recovered:

"Spaceman" by Babylon Zoo: Remember that one? 8D It got popular because Levi's used it in a commercial like 15 years back. This is the original, SLIGHTLY less 90s-pop version. XD (Isn't it awesome to listen to old songs when you actually know enough English to understand the lyrics? Lolz)

"Don't Fear The Reaper" by The Mutton Birds: I discovered this song when it played during the credits of "The Frighteners", a comedy/horror movie from 1996. XD I really like it!

(I also randomly came across Paloma Faith whose name I never even heard before o_O she's pretty good!)

PS: I've changed my LJ bg to something less grating until I can figure out what to do with the layout, lolz. D8 There are sites especially for LJ layouts, right? Can anyone point me to a good one? XD

PPS: Dang, are the music links working for you? D8 Somehow the mp3s won't start playing for me... but I checked the files and the code, they SHOULD wourk. >_> Is my firefox just acting up?

11:40 pm - Another one of those humongous entries that covers everything and nothing

Oh god, what happened to my old-as-fuck layout? Ohnoez. I remember a friend writing most of the CSS file for me... because my CSS is made of fail and lose. Damn. Then again, I guess it's tolerable. For now. >_> (HELP ME LOL ;__;)

I swear I've started this entry at least 5 times in the past few months. FIVE. And then I got distracted. My last entry was so long ago, I'm not even going to pretend that I try to update regularly, I FAIL AT THIS. Although I do love LJ dearly and need to spend more time on it. ANYHOW.

So, what happened since last time I posted? I was in China. It was a very short trip for such a big country; just 3 days in Shanghai and 5 in Beijing. BUT IT WAS AWESOME! 8D One of the reasons I haven't posted earlier is because I hadn't uploaded my awesome China photos yet. And well... now my Flickr subscription has run out and I literally need to make me some interwebs monayz via commissions to upgrade it again so you guys can see the proper China folder. *headdesk* So the China report is something for another entry, hopefully! For now: It was super awesome, interesting and getting around wasn't as difficult as I had expected, despite my amateurish Chinese. Yay for comprehensible subway systems! XDD Shanghai is HUUUUUUGE! Omfg. Like NYC, except about 10 times bigger and growing. It's CRAZY.
I would love to work in Beijing for a year or so, but it's difficult to get a good internship without contacts or anything (lolz it would be so easy if I studied engineering, stupid university of technology lol .____.)
Have one of the pictures I took in Shanghai until I get mah Flickr going:

RANDOM SHANGHAI PHOTO LOL

Future angstings and stuff )

Now for some media talk! Lololol, random. )

Man, I feel that I covered this timespan really inadequately. XDDD I need to drop the habit of making all-encompassing entries and learn to do smaller entries, more often. >_> LOL NOW I JUST HAVE TO *ACTUALLY* DO THAT AND NOT JUST SAY IT.

++++++| RANDOM NEWS UPDATE LOLZ |++++++

Muffins? NO!!

Whoo, I have a new laptop! Because of my troubles of getting one with XP installed that's not a netbook, I got one with a free DOS to install the stuff myself. Thankfully my university still gives out XP licenses. @_@
It's a Hewlett-Packard one with a 15.4 inch screen, 160GB, 3GB RAM and 2GHz. The graphic chip is enough for me to run Photoshop, so it's perfect to take it along on the trip. XD When I need a laptop for work later on I'll get one with a better graphics card, but this one will be just fine in the meantime, and it works perfectly. 8D ♥ It only cost 370€ you guise! That's cheaper (and better) than most netbooks, ahaha. I think I might take along an additional external harddrive though, with enough space for a little movie/tv shows collection. XD
I've never had a laptop before (never needed one), but it's fun now to slouch around on my bed while being online. XDD I need to get a mouse for it though, the touchpad is overy sensitive and I keep clicking things that I don't want to click XD (although I'm sure that can be helped through configuration *lazy*).

[info]toasterdog visited me for a week and we had lots of fun watching Star Trek TOS and failing at Super Mario Bros. XD I downloaded some SNES games yesterday and ordered a game pad today 8DD Yay! I miss playing Yoshi's Island. I should probably get the real game as well, though D; I only have it for the GBA.

I'm currently still looking for a nice room in Liverpool. (actually I haven't been for a week- I guess that's sorta bad for pending offers XD; ) There are so many sites for it and you always have to write to people to ask for more info and pictures, arggh. There are always advantages and disadvantages to each offer. Some include cleaning of the bathroom/kitchen in their rent, that's so tempting. 8D;; I started a categorized list to at least keep track a little. XDD Already managed to book the flights, despite Ryanair being a total bitch and not letting me book anything for several hours, there were errors popping up everywhere lolz. @_@;;

I also discovered a little bagel shop in my city that I'm unreasonably happy about. XDD There aren't a lot of bagels around here!
Oh, and this bunny has nothing to do with anything whatsoever. It just appeared while drawing. XDD

Also, WHY THE HELL IS MY TEXT CENTERED? I DID NOTHING OF THE SORT. D8 *fails at basic HTML*

Summer internship in Liverpool as a concept artist for a gaming company.
AWESOME, Y/Y?
I'm super excited. @_@
They don't pay that much so I'll have to support myself for the most part, but whee, work experience! Now I have to go buy a laptop. XD;;; So I won't be completely cut off from THE INTERBUTTS AND YOU while being gone. (This should totally be a book, ~*The Interbutts and You*~)

So, I know I'm an idiot for asking this, but is it easy to de-install Vista on a laptop and install Windows XP?
I ask this because all laptops you can get here have Vista pre-installed. T_T
I want XP. I could get XP Professional really cheap from my university, so if it worked that easily, that would be great. @_@ I dunno, maybe I'm just too suspicious of those sellers. XDDD I always think they build in barriers or something.

ANYWAY!
omg.
Like.
I have to find a room and flight and bus tickets and public transport and bank account and and and

Have any of you guys been to Liverpool? :0 HOW IS IT? I've never been there. Lolomg.

To celebrate Liverpool-ness, have some Beatles:

"Obladi Oblada"

Also, I keep writing "Liverpoop". I'm sure that's a good omen. XD

12:18 pm - lol Star Trek

So, I was the last person on Earth to see the new Star Trek movie. XDDD Here's my selective opinion on it (because I always forget major points anyway XD).
I was a bit afraid because of JJ Abrams and all that, you know. (I really hated Cloverfield >_>) But I was pleasantly surprised. 8D

First off, it was really FUN to watch. 8D Really kept my interest up all the way through.
I loved the Romulan ship design! Although the Romulans themselves confused me, I know they have the same ancestors as the Vulcans, but they really looked like tattooed Vulcans. 8D;; (the main baddie had Mulder's voice in the German dub olololol)
The space scenes were awesome @-@ really neat CGI. Maybe a BIT much fake lensflare in the first half. XDDD The whole new parallel universe/time travel thing was a bit obscure, but maybe that's because I was tired. 8D;

About the characters, I really liked their representations overall. Lol, Chekov was awesome (although I thought they overdid him a little). I think they could've toned down that young-Kirk-was-such-a-daredevil-omg, because it just seemed stupid to me. XD; But Kirk was better once he was on the Enterprise. Paul McGillion as Scotty would've been so much more fitting, but oh well. XD
Uhura was really empathic (ollolol), but that's sorta fitting I guess, and Quinto as Spock was pretty awesome, I must admit. And Leonard Nimoy had a bigger role than I thought!

BUT. Spock/Uhura? XD REALLY? Come on. It was sweet and I guess okay if you haven't seen TOS at all. Because this doesn't really fit. But if you just see it as non-sorta-half-canon, it's still fun. XD I can deal with that.

What did you guys think? 8D

Anyhow, whoa, I need to return to LJ big time. *cradles flist* D8 I think I ask this every year, but what will you guys do over the summer? XDDD Me, I have no idea where I'll be. @_@ I'll either get an internship or not. Lolz. (never mind that I have U2 concert tickets for London in August and can't even book a flight because I don't know where I'll be then XDDDD; I hope it'll work out anyway and I won't have to spend a fortune to get there)

I'm actually back on DeviantArt, yay! XDD I'm looking forward to drawing something for myself, or rather my portfolio maybe. 8D; That really needs some real pictures. Did you get spam comments on DA as well? @_@ I got like 20-30 within a week! I believe someone hacked people's accounts, it's weird that someone would put such an effort into hacking just to post obvious spam. XD And they have a new design AGAIN, I feel so old. XDD

I've managed to upload a lot more pictures of my Bolivia/Peru trip in the last 2 weeks (when the main uni work ended), so I shall pimp out Flickr once again! XDD

Have you guys seen Bolt yet? 8D I saw it a week ago, so cute. X) Of course the ending was pretty kitschy again, but I liked the idea and the characters, like a million times better than Madagascar 2. Lolol @ the pidgeons. Sooo, which one is next? "Up"? XD

2:29 am - Crazy Christmas Rantings

Sooo, how's everyone dealing with Christmas shopping so far? XDD Not to stress you, but OMG GET YOUR PRESENTS, IT'S ALMOST CHRISTMAS!!1 LIKE TOMORROW!1 Lololol j/k. 8D;
I haven't bought all of them myself yet, but I've already got my parents' presents (a digicam for my dad and an mp3 player for my mom) all sorted out, so that's a plus. XDD I still have to get some stuff for my best friend (NOT TELLING LOLZ) and some other smaller stuffs.
Buuut, having something for my parents really takes pressure off me. XDDD It was so DIFFICULT to think up new stuff in the years before (you can't always give them books and ties after all XD; ), but now that they've got a laptop for themselves, it's gotten so much easier. XDD Now I'll just get them computer-related technology so they're FORCED to use it! XDDD HEHEHEHE.
(Next year I have to teach them how to reach my Amazon wishlist, I mean gee XDD)

About what I would wish for ...I have no idea. @_@ I might have to get a new iPod, since my old one's battery has noticeably lost power in the past months. 8D; Buut I dunno. D; Or maybe I'll wish for an external harddrive. Or something. Naw, that's boring. XDD Ah, I dunno. Clothes are boring too. What are you guys wishing for? 8D;;; (IMMA STEAL YOUR IDEAS)

In the past years I sent out some self-made digital Christmas card thinger with a picture I've drawn, I dunno if I can do something of the same effort this year. D8 NO TIME TO DRAW MUCH OMG~ I still have a commission to finish, and I should research my butt off for the next uni presentation (LOLZ lawsuits D8 ). ANYHOWSA. I'm loving our Christmas market. 8D CHOCOLATE-COATED MARSHMALLOWS FTW! (gotta take pictures of it)

I'm still trying to recover from how much money the failure of my old PC ate (and so suddenly D8{ ), but I'm loving the new one. 8)
THIS IS WHAT MY NEW PC LOOKS LIKE, TRUFAX:
PC
I named it Fury because it is black. XD (LIKE THAT OLD TELEVISION HORSE THINGER!1 *fail*)

And now for something completely different the next holiday anxiety: I DUNNO WHAT TO DO FOR NEW YEAR'S OMG D8!1

Dear Santa...

Dear Santa,

This year I've been busy!

In April I invaded Iraq, broke it, and couldn't glue it back together before Mom got home (-1012 points). Last Wednesday I gave [info]tania a wet willie, then I took it back (-5 points). Last week [info]_telecaster and I donated clothes to the needy (11 points). Last month I pushed [info]one48am in the mud (-17 points). In November I gave [info]kateheightmeyer a Dutch Oven (-10 points).

Overall, I've been naughty (-1033 points). For Christmas I deserve a moldy sandwich!
