Good documentary, that one. I am happy that things are slightly better in Holland, and that I got my dog from a breeder who goes through all the health test steps and breeds for well-being, rather than looks.

Yeah, I have no idea what it's like in the rest of the world...
I think that even without inbreeding, it's horrible if they're bred in such a way that only looks matter and people don't care if they can't breathe or their legs get all screwed because "OMG SO CYOOTE/PERFECT" D:

Indeed. Beauty 'standards', I've decided, do nothing to improve quality of life for both animals and humans. :/

I had no idea this was happening. I'm the UK, I have gotten the train to B'ham (where Crufts is held) with these dog.. collectors. I can't bring myself to call them owners, owners cherish the health of their animals. Even as much as a cat person that I am, it made me cry to watch it.

Even my mongrel (a collie cross labrador) has the genetic problems that are stated in this documentary for labs. She does indeed have eye and joint problems. :'(

I guess it's pretty widespread and even folks NOT looking for pedigree dogs get these genetic faults in their pets because they might still have descended from overbred dogs. D8 Idk what could even be done about it, flying in a lot of dogs from other countries probably and fucking punish the people who are responsible for these sick guidelines and those that follow them 8D;;

I'm glad someone finally made this -__-. Everything in this documentary is very true, and while there seem to be a few more health standards in Canada, where I'm from, all of the health problems mentioned are still incredibly common and pedigree dogs are just as sick. Honestly, it should be criminal to continue breeding dogs this way.

The truly sad thing to me is the number of people in my veterinary class who own/ plan to own these breeds while being fully aware of their health complications. It honestly sickens me that people who claim to care for these animals would knowingly continue to perpetuate these problems.

Yeah, I was shocked. D8;;; I mean I already knew some problems (like pugs and breathing/eyes, etc.), but I didn't know it was fucked up on such a large scale.
Yeah, I know some people who want to get dogs like those D:. I think most people are in denial about those problems, or seriously have never heard of them. But vets, omg. XD; They should at least know.

Wow. Just wow. I need to show this to my Mom and my sister.
We have a "purebred" Old-English sheep dog, but lucky he (from what I know) has no problems, and the lady we got him from (From what my mom said) is great.
Though I wonder if his prostate issues he had until he was fixed might have something to do with his breeding.

This is all very disturbing. The fact that their skulls have morphed like that! :O The pug used to look nothing like they are today!! (actually, I think I perferd all the before dogs than the now)

Thanks for linking us to this video.

I know right O_O those before/after pictures were crazy. I would like to see more old pictures of the breeds, that's so interesting!

It is. 0_0 I want to see more photos too.
Though after showing it to my mom, I'm not so worried about our dog. She told me that Old English sheep dogs aren't messed with a lot (they still look like there old pictures), we didn't get him from a show dog breeder/not show dog line (and because of that he has genetic diversity. My mom said his mom had brown and white fur [a "bad trait" according to the AKC (American Kennel Club, my mom has a book they did. Actually, we looked in it to see some oldish pictures of some breads, like the pug. You wouldn't believe how much they have changed in a relatively little amount of time. If you want I could scan in some photos/requirements)
Anyway, I was glad about that. But My Mom agrees with me, this is a real crime. She already knew about some of this, (which is why she stays away from certain breeds). She even told me that people didn't want the blood hound to be accepted as a breed by the Kennel Club because they where worried about breeders messing with them! (They are a "breed" now by the way)
